Catedrático de Universidad de Psicología Social, y Director del grupo de investigación “Psicología Social de las relaciones inter e intragrupales. Estrategias de mejora” en la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) en Madrid, donde recibió el título de Doctor en 1998. Junto al Profesor William B. Swann Jr., Ángel Gómez es uno de los pioneros en la investigación sobre Fusión de la Identidad, una conexión visceral del individuo con un grupo que predice comportamiento pro grupal, como sería la voluntad de luchar y morir por el propio grupo y el auto-sacrificio.

Actualmente, Ángel Gómez explora las causas de la fusión de la identidad junto a los profesores William Swann y Harvey Whitehouse, galardonados por la Fundación John Templeton de la Universidad de Oxford. Asimismo, continúa colaborando con expertos internacionales en las estrategias para mejorar las relaciones intergrupales y reducir el conflicto intergrupal y la violencia, como John, F. Dovidio, Linda, R. Tropp, Miles Hewstone, Ana Eller, Dominic Abrams, and Alexandra Vázquez, aplicando estrategias como el contacto intergrupal directo y extendido, la recategorización, y la verificación de identidades endogrupales.
